Are you a collector? Are your kids? What do you collect and why?
It is a funny thing collecting isn't it. I'm sure there is a bunch of psychology behind it but I think at it's essence, it is something that is just very human. Objects hold memories. They are a way of making a very small moment in time a little more permanent. They turn something kind of intangible into something you can quite literally hold in your hand.
Every collector has their own personal drives I think. Maybe what we collect is also a way of carving out our own personality. I can't tell you what I am, but I can SHOW you?
If you wanted to get to know me, you could just look in my craft cupboard. Sure there is paint and paper but there are also jars and jars of tiny pretty useless things. Boxes of items that COULD be something. Possibility everywhere. Wonder in the unexpected. I don't collect things in the traditional sense I guess, I like to think I rescue things.
My eldest, Finn is a collector too. I think it is one of the greatest gifts I have given him. He collects Moon Rocks and special shells, golden keys, shiny stones, tiny things from Christmas crackers and glossy clothing tags he has saved from super hero t shirts. On a shelf above his bed, he arranges his favourite cars and things he has won from vending machines, and on a separate shelf next to his bed, his collection of books about bums. On the fridge, and in overflow tins, are his collection of magnets from places dad visits while traveling.
If we go on holidays, the collection come with us. He chooses a smaller selection and sets up his display with care and precision. They are his way of carving out his territory and making himself at home wherever he is.
My youngest daughter is 2 and a half so I decided it was time for her to start to build her own collection. We started with the box, it had to be VERY special. A chocolate box turned out to be ideal and a coat of gold spray paint made it super classy ;)
Once dry, we decorated it with discarded toys and bits and bobs from one of my own collection jars and then Hazel gave it all a good coat of glitter for good luck.
I couldn't wait to see what she put inside. A tiny fairy, a plastic spider, some old jewellery, a sparkly star, a triangle, AND a square. This was serious business.
She has basically carried around the box not stop ever since. Finn is on NO CONDITION allowed to touch it.
So how about you? do you collect? do your kids? what do you collect and why? Comment below as I would love to know!
